Deliver Us

Deliver us from the evil one:

Temptation and the flesh, our old nature, are internal to humans. But we also have an external enemy who wants to destroy us. 1 Peter 5:8 tells us that the enemy is constantly seeking who he can destroy. Make no mistake about it we are in a spiritual war. The more I pray and read the Word the more I become aware of the resources we have to fight with in this war and the protection God provides for us as we pray. The Bible provides many different passages that depict God as protection for our lives. Psalms 91 tells of "abiding under the shadow of the Almighty," and that He is our "fortress and our refuge." Psalms 46 says "God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in time of trouble." Job 1 tells of a hedge of protection built around Job. Zachariah tells of God being a wall of fire around Jerusalem and the glory within. God can build a hedge around you and be a wall of fire around you and be the glory within.

1 Peter 5:8 NKJV

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

Psalm 91:1-2 NIV

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. [2] I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."

Psalm 46:1 NIV

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

Job 1:10 NIV

"Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.

Zechariah 2:5 NIV

And I myself will be a wall of fire around it,' declares the LORD, 'and I will be its glory within.'

In John 8 Jesus speaks of knowing "the truth and the truth shall set you free." In the passage Jesus was talking about being a slave to sin. The enemy wants to make you and I slaves to sin, to keep us captive to our sins. As I said before sin will take you farther than you want to go, keep you there longer than you want to stay, and invite you back anytime you want to go. But Jesus came to give us freedom form the bondage of sin, from the grips of the enemy.

John 8:32,36 NKJV

And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." [36] Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

Psalms 5 speaks of God surrounding us with a shield enabling us to shout for joy as we put our trust in Him. Psalms 9 tells of our enemies perishing in God's presence as we sing praises to our Most High God.

Psalm 5:11-12 NKJV

But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them; Let those also who love Your name Be joyful in You. [12] For You, O LORD, will bless the righteous; With favor You will surround him as with a shield.

Psalm 9:1-4 NKJV

I will praise You, O LORD, with my whole heart; I will tell of all Your marvelous works. [2] I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High. [3] When my enemies turn back, They shall fall and perish at Your presence. [4] For You have maintained my right and my cause; You sat on the throne judging in righteousness.
