What to do

Prince offers four steps in breaking a generational curse, I am adding the fifth all are words that begin with RE in English.

  1. Recognize - that is, in part, the purpose of this study.
  2. Repent of your sins, the sins of your family, or of a group you are part of
  3. Renounce all involvement in the occult
  4. Resist the enemy
  5. Realize you are in a long war

  Recognize

The first step in breaking a curse is to recognize that you are under a generational curse. In part that is the purpose of this study. The more information you know about your families involvement in some form of sin the better prepared you will be. In many instances you may not be able to determine the source of the curse. When I started to understand this teaching and break the generational curses in my life there were no living relatives on my fathers side of the family that could provide background into our family history. And there was very little information about my mothers side of the family. But as I have said there was sufficient evidence that I and my family were under a generational curse. Even if you do not fully understand the cause the curse can still be broken. God knows your family history.

  Repent

Matthew 6:12 says "… forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespassed against us." In order to break a generational curse we must forgive those who have sinned against us - placed the curse on our family. We may need to go back 3, 4, or more generations in order to find the one who caused the curse to come on the family. We may not be able to discover the specific cause and we may need to forgive our entire family or group we belong to for their sins. Matthew 6:14-15 tells us that we are only forgiven to the extent we forgive others. If I am truly being transformed into the image of Christ, if my nature is truly becoming more like Christ's nature, I must learn forgiveness. I have been forgiven so much, why would I not give others forgiveness?
Not only must we forgive others but we must repent of our sins, our own involvement in the thing that have placed us under a curse.

Matthew 6:14-15 NIV

For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. [15] But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

If you are part of a group or race that has been oppressed you may need to forgive the entire group the oppressed you. Jews, Native Americans, Blacks, immigrants, or other group that have been taken advantage of in the past need to forgive any group that oppressed their race. If in our family history or because of a group we belong to we may need to ask forgiveness for our ancestors. We don't need to go searching for sin, let the Holy Spirit reveal things in your life. If you begin digging around you will never stop. Trust the Holy Spirit.

  Renounce

Renounce all involvement with sin. I had to look up the definition of the word renounce. It means to give up or set aside voluntarily or to give up by formal declaration. Lay aside and give up any involvement in spiritual darkness by yourself, your family, your ancestors, or by some larger group you are a part of.
